Kitsch Fix: Clifton’s Cafeteria
My favorite kitschy diner/cafeteria is going to be a hipster hangout! This is a relic of old Hollywood, when tiki rooms lived strong & business owners were not afraid to alienate with a crazy theme. If the Country Bear Jamboree mated with your high school cafeteria, Clifton’s Cafeteria would be their love child. You can get bright green jello that was set with an entire Dole fruit cup and topped with Miracle Whip. Try the chicken pot pie or the meatloaf with mashed potatoes covered in gravy. Wash it all down with a tall plastic glass full of Hawaiian Punch. Trust me, everything is a blast from the past.
So, the big news is that the guys behind Edison — the converted DWP building that has depression era cocktails and speakeasy grub — are taking over. LAist reported that they will be keeping all the cool decor but adding a bar upstairs.
My tip is: if you want to say you were there before it was cool – HURRY & grab your gristly cafeteria lady fix before the food becomes cool diner food & you have to fight Betty Paige haircuts to get your $12 martini.
